Good Faith Estimate

Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

What this means for you:

  • If you don’t have insurance or are not using insurance, health care providers are required by law to give you an estimate of the expected charges for services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, including therapy.

  • Your provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your scheduled service. You can also request one before you schedule.

  • If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

What you should do:

  • Keep a copy of your Good Faith Estimate in case you need it later.

  • For more information about your rights, or to learn how to dispute a bill, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
